Our Sacred Honor
Former cabinet member under Reagan and now conservative author and speaker, William Bennett gives us "Our Sacred Honor" to convey the message of integrity and values for a valueless world.  As the author indicates in his Introduction: "This is a book of advice." But it goes far beyond that. The author has given us a treasure store of information, not merely advice, but history, philosophy, economics, etc. In short, a capsule of 18th century wisdom and knowledge. Book excerpts, letters, speeches--these make up the bulk of this outstanding volume.  Great for Sermons illustrations and just great reading

"Payday Someday"
Sermons by R.G. Lee including the famous "Payday Someday".  Part of a great collection of famous preachers of this and the last century.  I am not a real fan of reading other sermons but sermons like these are a great inspiration.  Here are twelve of Lee's most famous, most preached sermons--the ones he was asked to preach time and time again.
I read few authors with whom I agree 100%, and Rick Warren will not be the first.  He has adopted a stand on music and modern translations which I cannot endorse.  However, I still consider The Purpose Driven Church to be the best book on ministry I have read.  Yes, that's a period - no
qualifications.  Rick's approach is both Biblical and balanced.  He defines 5 essential areas of ministry: Evangelism, Discipleship, Fellowship, Ministry, and Worship.  He shows that each is equally
important to a growing, healthy church.  Warren writes, "Unless there is an intentional plan to balance all five purposes, most churches will embrace one purpose to the neglect of others.

He also defines 5 groups of
people to whom we minister: the Community, the Crowd, the Congregation, the Committed, and the Core.  That five-fold division alone has helped me and my church to better evaluate the effectiveness of our ministry.  In fact, it revealed a glaring deficiency in the structure of our church ministries.

I believe this book is must reading for every pastor who desires to have a more effective ministry.  Reading the book has not caused me to jump on the "Seeker Service" band-wagon - to get rid of my pulpit, employ dramas, or redefine my message.  But it has sharpened my perspective of ministry and reinforced basic principles in a refreshing context of ministry in the 21st Century.
